NRC amendment supports Palisades plan to recover tilted nuclear fuel assembly

The 10-day implementation period for a Nuclear Regulatory Commission license amendment at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant does not establish a deadline for completing the physical recovery of a tilted nuclear fuel assembly, according to Holtec International.

Holtec, which owns Palisades, clarified with WNDU that the implementation period applies to incorporating the approved amendment into the plant’s licensing basis. It does not require crews to complete the physical recovery of the affected fuel assembly by Friday, Oct. 23.

The NRC amendment allows Palisades to use a crane and other special equipment to lift the fuel while keeping it shielded and eventually moving it.

Palisades is working on the fuel assembly while preparing for a potential restart as the first revived nuclear plant in the country.
