Attorney General Raul Torrez has filed a petition to stop uranium mining at Crownpoint and Church Rock. “Nufuels” is currently the only company that holds a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that allows for uranium mining in New Mexico.
The company is looking to restart mining and processing for uranium at both Church Rock and Crownpoint. It comes just weeks after leaders broke ground on the environmental cleanup at Church Rock. The NMDOJ is filing a petition to block potential mining, citing concerns over water-quality standards, remediation and cleanup, and tribal regulations.
Attorney General Torrez says that the areas are “already burdened by the environmental impacts of historic uranium mining and clean up from previous operations” and that “we have an obligation to break this cycle of toxic environmental impact.”
