Belarus to build a third reactor at its nuclear power plant

The Belarusian nuclear power plant, which already has two power units, will have another one. Deputy Prime Minister Viktar Karankevich announced this following a meeting with Alyaksandr Lukashenka on the development of nuclear energy, BelTA reports.

“Following the results of the meeting, a decision was made to develop the Astravets nuclear power plant, implement the second stage — the construction of the third power unit. And in parallel, work will be organized to study sites in the Mahiliou region,” said Viktar Karankevich.

According to him, if electricity consumption continues to grow, they may engage in “nuclear energy development” in the Mahiliou region, meaning they may build a plant there as well. These processes will take place in parallel, but with the third power unit at the Astravets NPP, “we will deal with it now,” added Karankevich.

The third power unit means that the station will also have a third nuclear reactor.

Alyaksandr Lukashenka, who has been discussing plans to build a second nuclear power plant in Belarus for several years, was enthusiastic about atomic energy during the meeting.

There have been previous reports about plans to construct a second nuclear power plant in Belarus or to add another power unit to an existing nuclear power plant. In late September, Rosatom’s head, Alexei Likhachev, expressed confidence that one of these options will definitely be realized.
