Poland plans to select a partner for its second nuclear power plant in 2027 and confirm the site in 2028, according to an updated government roadmap presented by the Ministry of Energy on Friday.
The project is part of Warsaw’s effort to reduce dependence on coal, strengthen energy security and build 6–9 gigawatts of nuclear capacity.
Poland’s first commercial nuclear plant, planned for the Baltic coast and based on US Westinghouse technology, is expected to begin construction in 2028 and supply power in 2036.
The second plant, scheduled for 2040, could be built near existing coal-power regions, with Bełchatów and Konin among preferred locations.
Officials want the project to rely less on taxpayer funding than the first plant, but Deputy Energy Minister Wojciech Wrochna said the financing model must remain flexible.
