Huaneng starts building Shidaowan nuclear plant Unit 2 in Shandong (China)

The Chinese group China Huaneng has announced the start of construction of the 1.2 GW second unit of the Shidaowan nuclear power plant (Phase 1), located in China’s Shandong Province, as first concrete was poured for the new Hualong One reactor.

China Huaneng plans to construct four Hualong One reactors, in two phases, at Shidaowan with a total installed capacity of 4.8 GW. China’s State Council approved the construction of Units 1 and 2 of the Shidaowan plant, located in Ningde, in July 2023. First concrete for Unit 1 was poured in July 2024. According to Huaneng, once completed, each unit will generate more than 10 TWh/year of electricity, equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by 3.12 Mt/year and reducing emissions by 8.16 MtCO2/year.

At the end of 2024, China’s nuclear capacity reached 60.9 GW and its nuclear power generation reached nearly 451 TWh (around 5% of the power mix).
