“Currently, activities are underway to carry out a Technical Feasibility Study (TFS), in which two providers – EDF and Westinghouse – will participate,” GEN Energija said in a press release.
The total estimated value of both studies, as each provider prepares their own, is 8.3 million euro ($8.6 million), and they are expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year.
KHNP had informed GEN that it had decided not to submit a bid for the preparation of a TFS and and would not participate in the bid submission for the construction of a second reactor at Krsko.
“Their decision is based on an assessment of the current business environment and a change in their strategic business priorities,” Gen-Energija said.
In October 2023, Gen-Energija CEO Dejan Paravan said that the company was considering Westinghouse, EDF and KHNP as potential contractors for the construction of the planned second unit at Krsko.
Last year Gen-Energija said an expansion of Krsko nuclear power plant’s capacity by 1,000 MW will cost an estimated 9.3 billion euro.
The Krsko NPP, located in Slovenia near the border with Croatia, currently operates a Westinghouse pressurised light water reactor of 2,000 MW thermal power capacity. The operating company, Nuklearna elektrarna Krsko (NEK), is co-owned by Gen-Energija and Croatian power utility Hrvatska Elektroprivreda (HEP).
