Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds announced his “Summer 2024 Nuclear Push,” composed of 10 aspects in a bid to promote nuclear energy in the U.S.
That includes six pieces of legislation and four letters to “leaders of top international institutions with nuclear financing capabilities.”
Below is a list of Donalds’ upcoming legislation:
- H. RES. 1395 – USA Russia China Nuclear Competition Resolution
- Declaring that the U.S. cannot allow Russia and China to “be outpacing” America in nuclear energy production
- H.R. 9198 – Maximize Risk-Informed Performance-Based Licensing Act
- Expedites Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s licensing process, dubbed as “slashing red tape and increasing efficiency” while “maximizing practical energy solutions”
- H.R. 9199 – Exclude Pesky Fees From Duplicative Nuclear Reviews Act
- Limits the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards application review to “novel concepts” and “minimizes duplicative fees,” which aims to increase efficiency and lessen “duplicative bureaucratic action”
- H.R. 9200 – Atomic Supply Chain Solutions Act
- Evaluate nuclear supply chain to “reduce regulatory barriers” and other costs, with an aim to prepare the country for more advanced reactors and promote supply chain growth
- H.R. 9201 – Nuclear USA Act
- Bolsters uranium mining, milling, conversion, enrichment, fabrication and reprocessing capabilities
- H.R. 9202 – Nuclear Waste Reprocessing Act
- Directs the U.S. secretary of energy to promote/facilitate the repurposing/recycling of used nuclear fuel, work toward environmental solutions regarding nuclear energy while maximizing economic potential
Donalds also sent letters to the president of the World Bank, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation CEO, and the president of Export-Import Bank.
In the letters, he promotes the country’s “nuclear export potential” to those with broad financing authority.
Donalds, who represents a southwestern Florida congressional district, has been an advocate for nuclear energy for years.
In 2023, he wrote about why he is so staunch of an advocate. Read more here.
