The first block of a small nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan is planned to be launched in 2029

The launch of the first block of a small nuclear power plant (SNPP) in Uzbekistan is planned for the end of 2029, according to the press service of Rosatom.

Representatives of Rosatom noted that the introduction of SNPP blocks will occur gradually and modularly.

According to information from the Russian company, the completion of all blocks is planned by 2023.

Geological exploration work is planned to start at the construction site of the SNPP in Jizzakh region in August-September 2024. Construction of a specialized city and infrastructure for the future project will also begin, the company added.

In late May 2024, Uzbekistan and Russia signed an agreement to build a small nuclear power plant based on a Russian project in Uzbekistan.

The agreement envisages the construction of an SNPP in Jizzakh region with a capacity of 330 MW, including up to 6 reactors of 55 MW each. The project cost is not disclosed.

Rosatom will be the general contractor for the construction, but local companies will also be involved.

The project is based on the latest development of Russian technology – the water-water reactor RITM-200H, the result of adapting innovative technology used in marine applications for terrestrial use. The thermal power of RITM-200H is 190 MW, electrical – 55 MW, service life – up to 60 years.

The RITM 200 series reactors have successfully passed tests on Russian nuclear icebreakers in the Arctic, confirming their reliability and efficiency.
