Kazakh-Italian Partnership Seals Sulfuric Acid Plant Deal

The planned capacity of the enterprise is 800 thousand tons per year

“Samruk-Kazyna” JSC, JSC “NAC “Kazatomprom”, and the Italian company Ballestra S.p.A. signed a strategic partnership agreement, QazMonitor reports, citing the press service of Samruk-Kazyna.

Signed during President Tokayev’s visit to Italy, the agreement is to attract investments for the realization of the project on the construction of a new sulfuric acid plant. The enterprise will provide the uranium industry of Kazakhstan with continuous production of sulfuric acid. The plant with a capacity of 800 tons per year is scheduled to be commissioned in the Turkistan region by the end of 2026.

Earlier reports indicated that Kazatomprom might adjust the production plan for 2024 due to difficulties associated with the availability of sulfuric acid, a key component in the uranium mining process, as well as delays in the completion of construction work at new mines. It was pointed out that the complex situation surrounding the supply of sulfuric acid was developing rapidly both in Kazakhstan and in the region as a whole.
