ENRRA approves third unit for Dabaa nuclear power plant with safety measures

The Egyptian Nuclear & Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) has given the green light to establish a third unit for the Dabaa nuclear power plant.

According to a statement released by ENRRA on Wednesday, discussions were held with representatives from the Nuclear Power Plants Authority‎ (NPPA) to evaluate the first two units and plan for the establishment of the third.

ENRRA assured the public that the third unit will not pose any threats to humans, the environment, or property.

The authority will closely monitor the NPPA’s efforts to ensure the implementation of strict safety measures.

This approval is part of ENRRA’s ongoing efforts to promote the safe use of nuclear technology in various development domains.

The DNPP is Egypt’s first-ever nuclear power plant, situated 135 km southwest of Alexandria and 320 km northwest of Cairo, designed to generate nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in collaboration with Rosatom.

The first nuclear reactor is set to go into operation in 2028.

In November, Egypt and Russia announced the beginning of the construction of the second nuclear reactor at the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant (DNPP) in Dabaa.

The planned four reactors for the DNPP are expected to operate at a full capacity of 4,800 MW by 2030
