KHNP Aiming to Win Nuclear Plant Project in Czech Republic

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) is stepping up efforts to win a nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic.

KHNP announced on Oct. 10 that it held a business round table with the Trebic Chamber of Commerce in the Czech Republic on Sept. 24 (local time). At the meeting, Kim Sang-don, head of the company’s Overseas Business Division, disclosed a plan to cooperate with local companies and the introduced KHNP’s nuclear power plant technology.

The Czech side welcomed KHNP’s interest in the nuclear project. “We are delighted to know that KHNP is interested in the Czech nuclear power plant project,” said Vyacheslav Jonas, chairman of the Dukovani Council. “The meeting was very constructive. We will continue to communicate with potential project operators.”

At the meeting, specific schedules for the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant project were also made public. CEZ Group, an electric power distribution company of the Czech Republic, plans to conclude a basic agreement on the construction of the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant with Trebic City within this year. It will start a bidding process in 2021 and finalize its construction plan later that year.

Earlier, the Czech government agreed on a funding plan with CEZ Group in July, accelerating the nuclear power plant project. They are expected to break ground in 2035 at the earliest after the plan is approved by the government. KHNP opened its office in the Czech Republic this year and has since been actively communicating with local communities.
