The team of the Rooppur NPP, which is now being constructed in Bangladesh following the Rosatom State Corporation’s project, has arrived to the Novovoronezh NPP to undertake their practical training. The first group of seven has already started the classes.
This practical training for the Bangladeshi specialists is held under the bilateral agreement, according to which the Russian counterpart undertakes to perform the construction and the launch of the power block as well as to train qualified staff to work at the Rooppur NPP.
The on-the-job training curriculum for the first group of the Bangladesh team visiting the Novovoronezh NPP is designed for 3 months. Further on, these specialists will oversee the construction of the Rooppur NPP, participate in the acceptance tests of the equipment, verify the compliance of the production documentation with the applicable standards, etc.
‘The erection of the first NPP in Bangladesh is quite an event. We will have two innovative 3+ generation power block in place, each with the capacity of 1200 megawatt. We are happy to have them constructed following the Russian design that was also implemented at the Novovoronezh NPP. We are extremely interested in studying all bells and whistles, speak to your experts face-to-face, learn about their experience and incorporate it in our country’, Yasin Arafat Khan, a representative of the Rooppur NPP Capital Construction Department team, said.
Over 500 Bangladeshi specialists are planned to complete their training at the Novovoronezh NPP until the end of this year, and around 1500 people will do the same by the end of 2022.
It is important to note that the first concreting at the Rooppur NPP took place in November 2017. As of now, the construction and installation works are in progress. The first power block of the Rooppur NPP is scheduled to be commissioned in 2023, the second one is due in 2025. The nuclear power in Bangladesh, which is now constructed following the Russian NPP-2006 project, will enable the country to address the lack of electric power in the region and create new jobs.
Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one – in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.
The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
