On Wednesday, May 14, Prime Minister Robert Fico held negotiations with US officials and the nuclear energy company Westinghouse regarding possible construction of a new reactor at the Jaslovské Bohunice site in western Slovakia. The American firm has expressed interest in constructing a next-generation reactor near the existing, Soviet-designed nuclear facility there.
The TASR newswire reported yesterday, May 15, that Fico had described recent talks with Westinghouse as “factual and highly professional,” signalling that the company could emerge as the leading candidate to build a new nuclear power unit in Jaslovské Bohunice.
Fico emphasised that Slovakia is well-prepared to move forward quickly with the project. “We already have a number of permits, including the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and site placement approval,” he said.
The planned power plant is expected to cost around €10 billion and would consist of a single 1,200 MW unit, built entirely under state ownership. A tender is planned for 2027, with full operation anticipated by 2040.
While France’s EDF and South Korea’s KHNP are also being considered, Fico suggested the US company is best positioned to deliver swiftly. “We are seeking a leader for this process. Given the dynamism of the partners involved, Westinghouse may be able to deliver results the fastest,” he stated.
The prime minister underlined the importance of maintaining control over strategic infrastructure. “This would be an important economic and energy instrument in the hands of the Slovak Republic,” he said, adding that state ownership would help the country better manage future crises.
Westinghouse, which is also supplying nuclear fuel to Ukraine and working on projects across central and eastern Europe, is offering its AP1000 reactor design. The pressurised water reactor is noted for its passive safety systems, which are designed to operate without human intervention or external power.
US officials express support
The American delegation, which included officials from the US Department of Energy and the US Embassy, reiterated strong support for Slovakia’s civil nuclear ambitions. The USA sees Slovakia as a key regional energy player, and Westinghouse executives have indicated they are prepared to assist not only with reactor construction but also with fuel diversification and financing.
“The US government sees Slovakia as a country with the capability and experience to lead on this continent – not only in pursuing its national goals, but also as a regional and continental leader,” said Aleshia Duncan of the US Department of Energy following the talks. She described the relationship between the governments as a “crucial foundation for business opportunities.”
US Ambassador to Slovakia Gautam Rana also described the discussion with the prime minister as highly productive and noted that energy is one of the main priorities of US President Donald Trump.
