Premier Cho Jung-Tai (卓榮泰) said on Tuesday that the government is working to diversify green energy and is open to new developments in nuclear energy technology. He also affirmed American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Director Raymond Greene’s recent statements regarding the United States’ role as a reliable energy partner for Taiwan.
Greene’s remarks triggered discussions regarding whether the U.S. supports Taiwan’s use of nuclear energy. In response, Cho said that while he is aware legislators are pushing to amend the Nuclear Reactor Facilities Regulation Act, the government must decommission Reactor 2 of the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant in accordance with the law before May 17.
Cho said that Taiwan’s approach to nuclear power is to foster dialogue and remain open to the possibility of cooperation with the owners or developers of advanced nuclear technologies. He emphasized that if society reaches a new consensus on the safety of nuclear power and the treatment of nuclear waste in a way that minimizes the risks to future generations, the government may reconsider its stance on nuclear power implementation.
