Russia eyes building nuclear power plant in South Africa

Russia is interested in cooperating with South Africa in peaceful use of nuclear energy, including construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in this country, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said on Tuesday.

“Russia is interested in cooperation in the sphere of peaceful use of nuclear energy, including construction of a NPP in South Africa, continued supplies of uranium product to this country, and joint making of isotope products,” the official said.

It was reported earlier that the High Court of South Africa’s province Western Cape recognized 2014 year agreements with Russia, the United States and the Republic of Korea on nuclear energy cooperation as invalid and suspended preparation of the tender for construction of NPP with the total capacity of 9.6 GW. The Court ordered to cancel the request for information (RFI) procedure announced earlier by South Africa’s Eskom acting as the nuclear project operator.
