Shin Kori-3 reactor operates without shutdown in first year

SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Yonhap) — The state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) said Friday Shin Kori-3, an advanced nuclear reactor designed for exports, has operated without problems since coming online in December 2016.

The ARP-1400 reactor in Ulsan, 410 kilometers southeast of Seoul, achieved “one cycle of trouble-free” operation for 389 days, the nuclear operator said.

It is an advanced pressurized water nuclear reactor built with South Korean technology and is the same model being built for the United Arab Emirates as part of a 2012 deal.

Shin Kori-3 has a capacity of 1.4 million kilowatt and a 60-year operational life cycle, and it generated 13,730 GWh of power during its first cycle of operation, the KHNP said.
