UAE Energy Minister: First nuclear reactor to be operational next year

UAE energy minister Suhail al-Mazroui said on Monday the country’s first nuclear reactor would “definitely” be operational by next year.

Speaking at an event in Abu Dhabi, al-Mazroui said the first nuclear reactor was 96 percent complete.

The UAE is looking to nuclear energy to contribute around 25 percent to its clean energy mix by 2021 and 50 percent by 2050.

Nawah, the joint venture between Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), that was set up to run the Barakah plant, will receive its operating license next year, the minister said.
