Mayor gives OK to restart reactors at Oi nuclear plant

OI, Fukui (Jiji Press)—The mayor of Oi on Monday gave his consent to Kansai Electric Power Co.’s plan to restart two nuclear power reactors in the town in Fukui Prefecture.

Oi Mayor Hiroshi Nakatsuka announced his approval to restart the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at the Oi nuclear power plant, at a meeting of town assembly members.

The company now has only to obtain consent from the Fukui prefectural assembly and Fukui Governor Issei Nishikawa to complete procedures to win local understanding for the restart of the nuclear reactors.

Previously, Nakatsuka said that he would make a decision after confirming whether local residents understand the country’s nuclear safety standards and the Nuclear Regulation Authority’s screening procedures as well as commitments to nuclear safety by the central government and Kansai Electric, and the position of the Oi town assembly.

In July, the Oi town government broadcast a video about the NRA’s safety screening on cable television while holding a briefing session for local residents.

Nakatsuka visited the nuclear plant and held talks with industry minister Hiroshige Seko last week, after the town assembly gave the green light for the restart of the nuclear reactors on Sept. 8.
